The “on Yer Bike” is a charity event of cycling that took place on 3rd September in the loving memory of a local businessman Stephen Carroll saw 45 riders cycle with a photograph of Stephen himself on their bike with the word ‘Chapeau’. They rode about 360km in 3 days.

Stephen Carroll was a local businessman who became very popular but lost his life to cancer in the year 2013 leaving his family and friends devastated. His friend Eoin Doohan organized this charity event because he wanted to make his friend more memorable. The riders were scheduled to start riding from Blackrock where the Carrolls live to Clare where Eoin’s home is in Liscannor. The event was organized to raise funds for cancer treatments of those who are in need of the money. Beffnie, Stephen’s wife participated in the race along with the other riders and his brothers and sisters. Before the riders took off for the race, all the gears were checked again and again. The volunteers rode before the others to cheer the locals who came out to support the group. The riders wore Louth colours and they intentionally split into 3 groups so as to enable the riders ride according to the speed they are comfortable to keep up the pace with.

The first day, the cyclists rode to Castlebellingham, Kells and Ardee to Athlone. The second day saw them riding from Athlone up to Limerick and this journey was a tough one due to the saddle soreness they were experiencing. As Friday arrived, they were at the final stage of the ride and changed into Clare coloured attires as they entered the homeland of Eoin.

Very person who took part in the race said that it has been a very emotional journey and they are very proud that their ride earned more than 80000 Euros that will definitely help a lot of people in need of the money for treatment. The money was given to Clare Hospice, The Irish Cancer Society and Noth Louth Hospice.
