Contador won’t be defending Vuelta crown

Alberto Contador, two time winner of Tour de France confirmed that he won’t be participating in the Vuelta a España to defend the title he holds this year. He further affirmed that he is looking forward to racing in the world championships late in the season. In his interview to the MARCA the Spanish daily he said that racing in Vuletta was not added to his racing calendar so he won’t be defending his 2012 victory.  According to him his team Saxo-Tinkoff has powerful riders such as Roche, Majka and  Kreuziger who can do well individually and end up  in the podium if they decide to participate in the event.

Contador who finished 4th in the overall standing of Tour de France had already announced to the press that he won’t be there in Vuleta. On the other hand the team boss’s suggestion hinted that the decision is not a final one. Contador’s comments published in MARCA’s Saturday edition were the latest news about him not contending in the event and this coming on the wake of gran fondo in Italy affirmed that fans won’t be seeing him on 24th August at Galicia when the Vuelta a España race  starts.

According to Contador he would be focusing on one day series instead and they may include GP de Plouay, France, Canadian WorldTour events in Montreal and Quebec, rounding it up with Milano-Torino and Giro DI Lombardia. He also showed his interest in racing the world championships to be held in Florence.  Contador will join Chris Froome, the Tour de France Champion and Ryder Hesjedal of Canada in the one-day races in Montreal and Quebec City next month. This is the only event held by the UCI WorldTour events in North America and 21 eight-man teams will fight for the honors in the hilly streets of the twin cities.


Contador will not defend Vuelta title

Two time Tour de France champion Alberto Contador once again stated that he will not defend his Vuelta a España title, but he expects to take part in the world championships later in this year.

Recently, while speaking to a leading Spanish newspaper, the Saxo-Tinkoff rider told that defending his Vuelta a España title was never in his schedule and this is the real reason why he would not take part in the event and try to defend his crown.
